Traffic Advisory: Brush Clearance on SR-27

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) may already be clearing weeds and brush (by hand) as a fire prevention measure on State Route 27 (Topanga Canyon Blvd.) from Cezanne Avenue to Entrada Drive in Topanga Canyon. The roadside work is scheduled to begin on or after June 21, with completion expected by June 30. To protect workers and the public, the work will require periodic lane closures with flaggers directing alternating traffic along portions of the roadway. Topanga businesses can remain open. Closing one lane allows traffic to continue accessing Topanga Canyon Boulevard while workers use hand tools clearing weeds and brush from the edge of the roadway up to 10 feet inward. No herbicides, pesticides or fire retardants will be used. Most improvements will be done in small sections from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Flaggers will communicate with radios to avoid extensive traffic backups. Signs alerting residents about the work will be posted. Motorists can expect delays. All work is subject to change due to weather or construction-related issues. Caltrans recognizes the inconvenience of these closures to motorists and businesses and is working with the Topanga Town Council to address concerns about traffic flow, noise, community events, holidays and Red Flag conditions, when work may be suspended. Caltrans’ goal is to complete the work as quickly and safely as possible. Motorists are strongly advised to seek alternate routes to avoid delays. Real-time traffic information can be found at quickmap.dot.ca.gov. Updates also are available on Twitter by following @CaltransDist7. The fire prevention work is separate from the previously announced storm repairs to damaged slopes and drainage systems along SR-27 from south of Cezanne Avenue to north of State Route 1 (Pacific Coast Highway). The project is temporarily on hold (see below). Caltrans reminds drivers to “Be Work Zone Alert” and to “Slow for the Cone Zone.”
