Art collector John Brewer’s Zoom presentation for the Topanga Historical Society (THS) on May 18, tapped into an obscure gem of Topanga’s history. Were it not for his in-depth research into the life of artist and engineer Paul Dubosclard (See “The Mystery of Artist Paul Dubosclard,� The Canyon Chronicle, May 13, 2022), we would be the poorer for not knowing. While greatly appreciating Dubosclard’s art, one participant appreciated the engineer who, Brewer revealed, played a role in her father’s history as a WWII pilot. She learned that Dubosclard was contracted by the U. S. government to exclusively provide the wing production equipment designs for every fighter aircraft wing built for World War II by the United States, surely for the planes that her father flew. (Find the full presentation on YouTube) Brewer’s extensive research will soon manifest in a self-published catalogue raisonné, a book documenting everything produced by the artist. Brewer, who grew up in Santa Monica Canyon, says the postcards reminded him of his childhood in the Santa Monica Mountains. I was wondering if that’s because we are in an unincorporated area of Los Angeles. [The article] seemed to indicate that we would be voting for Mayor. County and do not vote for the office of L.A. City Mayor. I have been following that race and am, admittedly, excited that Rep. Karen Bass is running for the office. My excitement was unfortunately misplaced albeit sincere. Who we are voting for is a new Third District Board of Supervisors representative to replace Sheila Kuehl, who is retiring. There’s a long list of candidates vying for that spot. Ahh, Topanga! Although we are blessed to live in our bucolic hideaway, we cannot help but be sorely aware of the troubled times throughout the world that affect us. This is a time to be kind to yourself and others.
