Thank You, Supervisor Kuehl

Dear Editor, As all of you know, we were scheduled to have our LA County Third District discretionary funds reduced on the assumption that other revenue (filming, events, weddings, rentals, etc.) could make up the difference. Then along came the COVID-19 closures and our revenues plummeted to near zero. We have reopened all of our trails and many facilities, but we have been struggling to figure out how to bring back our field workforce—now at only 50 percent strength—so we can restore services such as restrooms and grounds maintenance at our most heavily used parks. Supervisor Kuehl’s action suspending reductions for the next two years will have a marked impact, especially at the most heavily used parks where otherwise mundane activities have been challenging, what with the rush of folks wanting to get back outdoors and individual park revenue nowhere near breaking even. That is where the Third District subventions have been a godsend.   Thank you, Sheila. —Joseph T. Edmiston, FAICP, Hon. ASLA Executive Director, State of California, Natural Resources Agency
