Symphony’s 38th Season Delayed

By Jeanne Mitchell
The Topanga Symphony has presented three free classical music concerts a year since it was started in the summer of 1982. The music season always begins with the summer concert, and the 38th Season was to begin on Sunday June 14, 2020. However, the Topanga Community Club is closed due to COVID-19 so the first concert of the new season will be announced in The Canyon Chronicle when it is rescheduled. As we wait for the announcement of the next free concert of quality classical music, the Board of Directors has decided to launch the new Topanga Symphony logo designed by former Topanga resident, award winning logo designer and graphic artist, Connie Schurr. The printer-friendly logo, with musical instruments artistically embedded into the highlights of the mountains, represents the essence of classical music in the Santa Monica Mountains as the Topanga Symphony has been for the past 37 years. Sylana Smith, daughter of former Topanga Symphony president, Jack Smith, designed the original logo of Orpheus, a musician in Greek mythology, playing a lyre under a tree. This artistic logo symbolized the Topanga Symphony, and will continue to be seen in the concert program notes, never to be completely retired, but to live on in the heart of our programs. As a promotion for the new logo and to provide an opportunity to support the Topanga Symphony, a newly minted lapel pin is now available for purchase. The lapel pin is available at: topangasymphony.com, select “Support Us.” The Topanga Symphony Board of Directors is also producing additional items: hats, bags, wine glasses, and t-shirts, that will be available for purchase soon.
BECOME A FRIEND!

The Topanga Symphony is supported by community members through tax deductible donations to the “Friends of the Topanga Symphony”, local businesses that place ads in the concert programs, and from generous grants from LA County Supervisor Sheila Khuel and the Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture Organizational Grant Program.

More than 100 concerts represent a truly community orchestra, consisting of a mixture of amateurs, students, and professional musicians under the direction of Jerome Kessler since 1982. An exceptional caliber of soloists has performed throughout the years bringing the classical masterpieces to life here in Topanga.

Many premieres of contemporary classical music compositions have been presented to the audiences who come from the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area.

The Topanga Symphony is truly a shining star of the Topanga community and surrounding Santa Monica Mountains. As we await the next concert performance, secure your Topanga Symphony lapel pin with the new logo and wear it proudly to promote and show support for this amazing orchestra.
