Will Geer’s Theatricum Botanicum presents five-time Tony Award-winning playwright Terrence McNally’s Pulitzer Prize-nominated, magical, poetic play finds humor within the self-searching American abroad. Two friends travel to India with heavy baggage in tow, reeling from loss and personal demons. The Hindu god Ganesha, manifest in their fellow travelers, points them toward the revelation that sometimes, the greatest journey is surviving life. Pay What You Will ticket pricing is available for the 7:30 p.m. performance on August 4th and September 1st. Tickets will be available online the week of the show and at the door for cash purchase on the day of the performance. Monday through Friday classes from 10 a.m.-12 p.m.; 1-3 p.m., Saturdays, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Using traditional artists techniques, students learn about all mediums. $30 per class ($180 per six, two-hour workshops) and is designed for the inexperienced and those who want to improve their skills. Students work at their own pace. Each class focuses on a different skill building technique and are taught through the use of still life, floral, seascape and landscape setups. The Resource Conservation District (RCD) presents “Creating Art with Nature,” part of a series of immersive outdoor workshops that guide participants through LA’s most scenic and unexplored wild spaces. This workshop guides participants through natural-based and sustainable crafting including paper-making and plant-based fabric dyeing. Experienced naturalists will lead a short hike to explore the types of plants that can be used in these nature-based practices. Following the workshop will be an optional opportunity to further engage with fellow workshop participants and leaders at a nearby venue following the workshop. Tonight’s show will look at the second era of Mars exploration, starting with the arrival of the Mars Pathfinder Mission in 1997. This heady era saw the MER rovers and their descendants, plus a whole international fleet of orbiters, still going strong. Friday, July 28, at 8 p.m. (following “The Night Sky Show” at 7 p.m.): “Fire in the Sky – The Perseid Meteors of 2023” — Senior Lecturer Jim Mahon. This year’s Perseids will be ideal for observing from a dark-sky site on their peak night of August 12-13. Tonight’s show will discuss the origins of this annual celestial spectacle, provide tips for observing the shower, and even point viewers to a group (not associated with SMC) they can join at a dark camping site to enjoy the meteor shower. [Note: The site offers only very basic, primitive camping.
