Saving the Magic of the Night
With light pollution increasing by nearly 10 percent each year, it’s more than just our view of the stars that are being lost. Earlier this year, I met a group of local DarkSky Advocates in Taipei that was racing to protect a firefly colony from extinction. They took action, changing the lights in their local park and turning them off entirely during the breeding season. Today, the firefly colony has rebounded from a handful of individuals to thousands.Â
