Saving the Magic of the Night

Saving the Magic of the Night

With light pollution increasing by nearly 10 percent each year, it’s more than just our view of the stars that are being lost. Earlier this year, I met a group of local DarkSky Advocates in Taipei that was racing to protect a firefly colony from extinction. They took action, changing the lights in their local park and turning them off entirely during the breeding season. Today, the firefly colony has rebounded from a handful of individuals to thousands.  —Ruskin Hartley Executive Director, darksky.org About Dark Sky: Thanks to more than 193,000 supporters, members, and advocates in more than 70 countries, Dark Sky provides leadership, tools, and resources for individuals, policymakers, and industry, in order to reduce light pollution and promote responsible outdoor lighting that is beautiful, healthy, and functional.
