Sages Garden Club Looks to Sustainable DIY Home Gardens

October 13, 2023 Balmy breezes wafted through the open doors of the light and bright Sages room as the first meeting of the Sages Garden Club got underway at the Topanga Community House with Master Gardener Sarah Priest at the helm. She led off the discussions by sharing expert tips and tricks for creating stunning, sustainable personal garden spaces at home, as well as step-by-step advice on DIY garden construction. She is also offering landscaping consultations tailored to your personal garden paradise. Renowned architect and native Topangan Hannah Wear was also on hand to present some hard-earned wisdom and advice on “going native,” starting with what to plant for fall and where. As a popular surprise she also brought her personally curated native plant collection for sale in a “trunk show” format outside under the oaks after the meeting. She is also offering the opportunity for a personal consultation on how to care for these beauties as part of her ongoing “Pollinator Project.” Her native plant collection is always available for sale at her shop next to Sassafras Store and Nursery in in the Topanga Creek Courtyard. Contact her at (310) 455-3388.

The next monthly meeting of the Sages Garden Club at the TCC is set for November 2, 1-2:30 p.m. The meetings are fun, free, and open to all ages. Meeting topics will vary according to “popular demand.” The list grew long as attendees added their topics that include: sustainables, succulents, drought tolerant planting, hemp, veggie gardens, pollinators, garden art, composting, micro-greens, rock-scaping, garden tours, a garden swap meet, and more. Everyone will have an opportunity to share their ideas, as well as the chance to be a “presenter” or “mini-presenter.”

“The Canyon Sages are offering an ongoing community event that is, at its heart, a chance for everyone to sustainably contribute to what makes Topanga so unique and rare in these times,” Priest said. “We all want to do what we can, so let’s get together and keep our precious resource of Topanga the garden spot of LA, and the world.”
