Sages Garden Club Growing Strong

The Sages Garden Club launched earlier this year and is quickly gaining momentum as Topanga gardeners of all ages are loving getting together and sharing their secrets. Meetings are super interesting and take place in the pretty and updated Sages Room at the Community House. In these early meetings we have discussed where to buy native plants here in Topanga (Sassafras Shop), explored a community garden, and local speakers have generously shared their “How Tos” on sustainable gardening, soil, garden design and veggie production.
Native plants expert Hanna Wear is always a welcome presence at Garden Club meetings.
Carolyn Day, founder of Growing Hope Gardens, is known as well for her children’s classes at the Topanga Community Center garden.
Garden Club moderator Sarah Priest (left) and Jules Gerard join the group as they examine a variety of “rainbow” corn from the Cherokee and Pawnee. Evidence suggests that corn may have been cultivated in the U.S. as early as 2100 BC in areas of Arizona and New Mexico.
Ancient corn varieties were previously stewarded by Native American peoples of Oklahoma.
The last meeting featured Carolyn Day, whom many of us know locally from her recent children’s classes about organic gardening at the Topanga Community Center garden.

Drawing on her colorful background, including being a circus performer, acrobat, surfer, and stuntwoman, she explained her most poignant life experience as a young un-housed person that led her to her current project, Growing Hope Gardens, of growing thousands of pounds of food in urban planters around Los Angeles to feed hungry people. For more information or to volunteer, contact Carolyn at: growinghopegardens.org.

SAVE THE DATE! Please join us at our next meeting in the Sages Room on December 7, from 1-2:30 p.m., when local garden genius Delmar Lathers will be giving his insights into regenerative agriculture. Drawing on his generational and life experience, as well as the innovative concepts in the “Little Big Farm” model that he teaches students in the Farm Program at Manzanita School.

Also on tap will be Scott King and Company sharing their most recent experiences in local “rock-scaping” and water gardening.

Local architect and native plant expert Hannah Wear will once again share her vast knowledge and brilliance regarding how to care for healthy native plants and offer her curated native plants for sale after the presentation.
Come and share your Topanga garden experiences or become one of our local presenters in 2024.  Wendy Forrester of the Sages will be hosting and I will be available for professional garden consults and advice. All ages are welcome!
