Rides for Seniors Return to Topanga

At a recent meeting with Supervisor Lindsay Horvath’s aide, Sophia Soudani, leaders of the Canyon Sages expressed some frustration that Cityride, a low-cost ride service for seniors and the disabled, did not cover Topanga. They explained to her that since ours is a remote community, as seniors become less able to drive, their need for such a service is essential. Soudani soon got back with the good news. The Canyon is once again covered by Cityride, which includes a Dial-a-Ride van service and on-demand taxi service for seniors over 65 or qualified people with disabilities. Topanga is now covered in Area 2 of Cityride. For a quarterly fee of $21, applicants can receive $84 worth of rides on either their Dial-a-Ride service or with approved taxi services. Each Dial-a-Ride costs $4 per ride or $2 for shared rides. If you need more coverage in a quarter, you can buy up to $336 dollars of coverage on a sliding scale up to a cost of $84. Are you low-income and can’t afford these fees? You can apply for an even lower-cost use, starting at $9 per quarter for $84 worth of rides. The vans are wheelchair accessible, as are taxis, upon request. There are some restrictions. Dial-a-Ride only covers up to a 10-mile one-way trip. Taxis are not limited in distance, but you must cover any cost over $20 and all tips out-of-pocket. Also, you must order Dial-a-Ride in advance, though taxis should be available 24-7. Want to apply or find out more? You can go to ladottransit.com/cityride for complete information and registration. Or call (310) 808-7433 for more information. The Sages are free to join and open to new members. Volunteers are always welcome. Visit canyonsages.com to sign up and see what activities the Sages offer. About The Canyon Sages. It was established in 2009 as a committee of the Topanga Town Council set up to create activities for seniors and reach out to those who are isolated or in need.
