County efforts to enhance traffic safety on Mulholland Highway may benefit Topangan’s concerns about road racing and other traffic safety measures here at home.
November 19 marks World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims: November 19, 2023 (visionzeronetwork.org) (WDoR) when families and friends will remember loved ones who were killed or severely injured in road traffic accidents. The date is also an important day of action for Vision Zero.
On August 8, L.A. County Third District Supervisor Lindsey Horvath introduced a motion related to enhancing traffic safety on Mulholland Highway in collaboration with Public Health, CHP, and community members. In the continuing wake of the Woolsey fire where Mulholland Highway was severely damaged, repairs are estimated to be completed by January 2024.
As the U.S. grapples with an epidemic of traffic deaths, she and other city officials around the country are turning to Vision Zero (visionzeronetwork.org), a traffic safety initiative based on 2022 statistics citing more than 46,000 people killed in preventable traffic crashes, a 10.5% increase compared to the 38,824 fatalities reported in 2020, underlining the need for transformational change. For people walking, the situation is even more dire, with a 13% increase.
The initiative prioritizes implementing safety enhancements and programs, primarily to manage or reduce speeding on Collision Concentration Corridors (CCCs) throughout the County. CCCs are half-mile roadway segments where three or more fatal or severe injury collisions occurred within 5 years (2013-2017). There are five CCCs within the stretch from Zuma Ridge Fire Road to near April Road.
WDoR’s theme, “Safe Streets for People,” emphasizes the importance of people-first policies, including Vision Zero and Complete Streets, and convincing decision-makers at all levels to invest in road safety measures, such as lowering speed limits, redesigning roadways, promoting alternatives to car use, incentivizing safer vehicle designs, and allocating more funds for safety rather than speed. #SafeStreetsForPeople #WDoR2023
