A leading light in Topanga has gone out. Mary Colvig passed on January 26, 2021, of cancer. Hers was a gentle but steadfast light that brought a heart of gold and a mind of steel to those who knew her. Without her the Topanga Messenger would not have lasted a day, let alone 40 years. In her wisdom, she knew when to let it go, 40 years exactly to the day. She leaves behind her beautiful children, stepchildren, and grandchildren, who already carry that light forward, each in their own way. What a blessing to have been nurtured by her hand. Everyone who was fortunate enough to have called Mary “friend,” who laughed with her, cried with her, enjoyed her sardonic wit encased in a deceptively soft voice, can find comfort and peace in the memories they shared. Everyone should have a Mary in their life. Over time and when the family is ready, we hope the community will share their memories of Mary and help us pay fitting tribute to her in these pages (editor@thecanyonchronicle.com). —Flavia Potenza
