My Body

It’s hard to believe that in 2021, the world is still fighting to prevent sexual abuse. One of Peter Alsop’s songs, updated to fit the times, stands with South Africa’s 1st for Women Foundation that uses art and his music to fight violence against women. Peter Alsop’s “My Body†debuted in 1983 on his album, Songs on Sex and Sexuality. It was taught in sexual abuse prevention programs in schools around the world. While strides have been made to combat this devastating social problem, sexual abuse has not been defeated, and Alsop’s song remains relevant. The 1st For Women Foundation approached Alsop in 2020 about sampling his song in their campaign to raise money and bring awareness to the problem of violence against women in South Africa. “Music has the ability to change attitudes and beliefs,†explains Casey Rousseau of 1st for Women Insurance. This is certainly an idea Alsop can get behind. The resulting track, “My Body (Stand up),†combines Alsop’s powerful chorus: “My body’s nobody’s body but mine/You run your own body, let me run mine!†with inspiring new verses and a fresh hip-hop, R&B sound. The new track was composed by Chris Snyman and Garth Barns and features South African singer Lira, Juliet Harding from GoodLuck, Mariechan out of girl group, Jamali, and Gigi LaMayne. A talented and diverse group of dancers add their powerful moves to the music. The new verses breathe new life into Alsop’s chorus, as well as to the cause it champions. Stand up and let the whole world see That we’re not gonna sit and take it quietly Stand up and let the whole world know If you raise a hand to one You raise a hand to us all As great as “My Body (Stand up)†is, it will be far greater when the world arrives at a point where we never again need a song about the abuse of women. Sadly, we’re not there yet. To support this cause, download the song. Each download raises money to carry on the fight for a world in which women no longer live in fear. About 1st For Women: A company in South Africa that provides insurance to fit women’s unique needs. As part of the mission to support women, the company formed 1st For Women Foundation in 2005.
