Fernwood Rain Report 2021-2022 Season

Rain has returned to Topanga and the southland in a big way this last December. Over 10 inches of rain pelted the Canyon, including one storm that dropped over five inches of precipitation in one 24-hour period. That is about the same amount of rain we received all last year! While this wonderful rainfall has gone a long way to recharge the water tables in the Santa Monica Mountains, the region is still reeling from last year’s drought. Fortunately, this rain has fallen at a relatively steady and moderate rate that has given this life-giving moisture a chance to soak in. As usual we have received a lot more rain than the surrounding low-lying areas. Our season total of 13.47 inches of rain surpasses the 9.93 Inches of precipitation that has fallen on Los Angeles Civic Center as well as the meager 5.43 inches of the wet stuff that Fullerton has recorded to date.
This satellite image, taken by Himawari-8, a Japanese weather satellite, shows an undersea volcano eruption at the Pacific nation of Tonga on Saturday, January 15, 2022, sending large waves crashing across the shore and people rushing to higher ground (Japan Meteorology Agency). A tsunami advisory was issued for the U.S. west coast from California to Alaska where, according to the National Weather Service, the biggest tsunami wave, as of mid-morning, was 3.3 feet in King Cove.
