2022-2023 Year-End Rain Report
October 13, 2023
Our 2022-2023 rain year ended on September 30th and it was a juicy one. 41.27 inches of precipitation ranks number three in the 27 years that I have been keeping records with Davis Instruments weather stations.
The most unusual feature of this year’s rainfall was 3.34 inches of rain falling on August 20th and 21st. To give you an idea of how odd this much precipitation is in the heart of our dry season, the total amount of rain I have recorded in 27 years for all of those Augusts is only 0.15 inches!
Our 27-year average yearly rainfall is 19.41 inches here in Fernwood.
As usual, we saw more of the wet stuff than the flatlanders. Los Angeles Civic center recorded 31.07 inches of rain and Ventura saw only 28.61 inches of water out of their sky. Our 41.27 inches of rain can be attributed to the lifting of the warmer, moister layers of the atmosphere by Saddle Peak up into the colder, higher layers of air above.
