Adventures in Trash

Dear Editor, Like all of the other homeowners in Topanga, our $116 Wastemasters trash bill became $186 overnight. I was told the bill was due and payable and the reason for the 60 percent increase was “special trucks”. Now the story has become a “billing error”. What was initially surprise turned to anger and then to stone cold resolve. I immediately cancelled our Wastemasters account and they picked up their bins. Even if the bill returns to the existing rate, those lying cheats will not get another nickle from us.  So, we have begun our adventure in trash by sorting and bagging it and taking it to the dump ourselves. We already compost all our food scraps into rich soil and chip all of our green waste into useful moisture-retaining mulch, so there’s actually not a lot left over to deal with. We have one bagging barrel for trash and another for flattened plastic containers and metal cans. When there’s a decent load, which will easily take months, I’ll simply take it to the Calabasas landfill and dump it for $56.  Instead of becoming weak, helpless victims whose only power is to complain, we used this situation as a catalyst to take positive responsible autonomous self-governing action.  Once you get a taste of freedom...you never go back. —Greg Mamishian
