California as a World Leader in the Climate Challenge

As California takes bold steps to address climate change, which Governor Newsom called one of the “greatest existential threats” we’re facing, it’s an exciting time to stay on top of the progress being made in all areas of hydrogen energy. Following is a partial list of projects and plans worth keeping an eye on: Governor Newsom’s latest budget plan includes $2 billion toward green hydrogen, energy storage, and offshore wind, among other energy initiatives. Senator Bob Archuleta (D-Pico Rivera) chairs the Senate Select Committee on Hydrogen Energy. The committee is pushing for revisions to the Governor’s budget to provide more funding for light and medium duty hydrogen infrastructure due to what Archuleta calls a “desperate need for more hydrogen fueling stations.” SoCalGas is one of the first utilities in the U.S. to transition to a hydrogen fuel cell electric fleet. Lancaster, CA, entered an agreement with Namie, Japan, to use hydrogen as the energy source for the two cities. Near Bakersfield, climate technology innovator, Mote, established the world’s first facility to convert wood waste into hydrogen fuel while efficiently containing the carbon dioxide. Fresno County prepares to house the largest green hydrogen plant on the West Coast. Industry leader, Plug Power will build a facility that will eventually produce 30 metric tons of green hydrogen daily. The California Hydrogen Leadership Summit, scheduled for June 6-7, 2022, will bring together leaders from the energy sector, transportation, industry, academia, and state government to discuss policies and programs needed to move California toward it’s green goals. The development of hydrogen energy is playing a major role in California becoming a world climate change leader. If current plans are successful, the next few years may go down in history as the period when the worst of the climate change threat was neutralized.
