During the lockdown, the Bonnell neighborhood and its delightful denizens have become a microcosmic view of the world as seen through a pandemic-propelled peep hole (don’t you love alliteration?). Most of us who live here are pretty ordinary folk who live quiet lives, except when we don’t. We’re already missing our annual costume party before it doesn’t happen. In defiance, perhaps—“Take that, you stupid pandemic!�—some decorated their yards anyway. Doug and Jane Hammond will miss their annual transformation from the ordinary—Doug is a geology professor at USC and Jane is a Physician’s assistant specializing in hormone replacement therapy—to extraordinary Wizards when they welcome hordes of trick or treaters who cross the bridge to their patio for some wizard magic (and treats, of course). Just not this year. “Usually, at least 250 kids come to our home,� they say. “We also have their parents in costume, as well as adults in costume with no kids. Sometimes we have as many as 20 people at a time on our patio. As sad as that is for us, it’s safer this year not to host this Halloween favorite.� It was a unanimous decision to close the street to trick-or-treaters because the risk to the neighborhood of becoming a virus “super-spreader� event was too great. “We will miss you all but will make next Halloween extra special for all the great kids of Topanga,� the wizards promise. Continuing the theme of ordinary folk as extraordinary, Callie Moos experienced one of the unannounced mystery power outages and wrote a stream-of-consciousness email that made me chuckle and might elicit a smile of recognition and an eye roll from our readers. “Holy cow!�she wrote. “You are my one and only email, today because our Power was out from early this morning until about 2:30 p.m. Ugh a bug. To tell the truth, I was sleeping. My husband woke me up and said, ‘The power is out, and I need your help lifting the garage door.’ So, in my PJs I quickly go (No coffee. Ugh!) and pull that cord and he lifts the garage door and we place a metal pole inside this heavy door to hold it in place while he starts our Generator. (Everyone needs one and we have had ours for several years.) Therefore, we had no phones, not even our landline. Seriously? The cell phones didn’t work. In an Emergency and power is off, what if someone needs help or a doctor??? No 911 as communication is gone???? Completely! We never got any notice. It just went off and, of course, it was some Emergency and immediately I looked in the sky??? But, no, thank you, Lord, sky was clear. Must have been an accident? Or a California ‘turn off power save energy’ day?? Wonder what it was? Frontier sent us a message, which we never received until power was back on??? Sorry I did not reply until now. As the sun sets and the day was so beautiful, again I think of Topanga Canyon and how truly blessed we all are, to live in this (Last of the Old West) Topanga Canyon. Thanksgiving is coming...and I am thankful for many, many things.�
